Planning a Water Ride, Penny Ice Cap

oil on canvas, 48 x 60"/ 122 x 152 cm

This painting came after an expedition crossing the Penny Ice Cap in northern Baffin Island. This ice cap fed all the glaciers on Baffin and was remarkable to ski across. It often seemed like we were on another planet. During these long hard days, we kept our minds busy during the hardest moments by finding silly things to think about. When we saw this deep, polished gully of ice running under the glacier, we were wondering what it would have been like to slide down, and where we would end up. In the end, we had quite an exciting ride worked out! It helped pass some hard and monotonous hours and kept us thinking of our aches and pains as well distances yet to cover.
