I studied floor covering and interior textile design to degree level at Kidderminster College, accredited by Wolverhampton University. Since completing my course in 1999 I have developed my design skills and have become more interested in using surface pattern in paintings rather than from a design perspective.
My current work is of an abstract origin which combines a contemporary and decorative style, influenced by modern day living. I also take inspiration from nature, in particular sun sets and water which I explore through layering, colour and pattern.
My work reflects the enjoyment that I gain from experimenting with different media and surface pattern. As well as painting in an abstract style I also enjoy painting and drawing a variety of subjects, and more recently I have been following a stained glass course which I find both exciting and rewarding. I find that this allows me to explore colour and texture in a different way. It also allows me to use design processes from initial ideas through to the finished product.
I mostly work in gouache but have also used watercolour, pastel, silk paints, batik and acrylic. It mainly depends on what effects that I want to create and also what subject I was going to be painting or drawing.
I enjoy showing my work in exhibitions as I feel that seeing work first hand is important for the buyer and for the artist to show their work to pepole.
